SURAT: Led by a dazzling Riazuddin, Uttarakhand upset last year's runners-up Punjab 67-50 in the men's quarterfinals of the 59th Karp-Jyoti National Basketball Championships at the Pandit Deendayal Indoor stadium here on Monday.
International Riazuddin, who used to represent Railways, grabbed 27 points as his team swept to a 34-23 halftime lead and increased the advantage to 17 points when the hooter sounded for full time.
Former India skipper Jagdeep got 18 points for Punjab.
Indian Railways reserved their berths in the last four of the men's and women's events after posting facile victories in the quarterfinals.
Railways' women tamed Maharashtra 111-45. Their men were in equally devastating form against Andhra Pradesh whom they whipped 78-40.
Geethu Jose notched 26 points and Renjini Jose and M Pushpa 17 each as Railways eves strode to a 54-32 lead at halftime and kept on increasing their advantage with fast scoring on the breaks, a handful of three-pointers and effective blocking that broke down Maharashtra's efficiency in the second session. Renjusha Mathew (12) and Siji Kurian (9) were the losers' top scorers.
Tamil Nadu's women were made to fight by their neighbours Karnataka but the latter faded out of the picture after going neck-and-neck during the early phase of the match. TN won 66-54. Delhi made the women's semifinals list by trouncing Uttar Pradesh 108-44. Shiba Maggon (23), Prashanti Singh (21), Akanksha Singh (13) and Raspreet were in cracking form in the one-sided contest. Delhi led 48-28 at the break.
